Review: Our Year of Maybe

OUR YEAR OF MAYBE
Rachel Lynn Solomon

I don't have the words to fully express my love for this book. My expectations were kind of ridiculously high; Rachel Lynn Solomon's first book, YOU'LL MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE, was one of my most anticipated books of 2018 and one of my favorite books of 2017 (thank you, NetGalley!). It felt like I'd have to wait so long for OUR YEAR OF MAYBE, but Edelweiss made all of my hopes and dreams come true by granting my request last summer. And this book absolutely lived up to my expectations - and shattered a few to boot!

Let's start with what I think Rachel Lynn Solomon's greatest strength as an author is: the characters. Sophie and Peter were both exceptionally written, and I was invested in both of their stories by the end of the prologue. Their relationship is so complicated, and is navigated with such nuance, but they both have parts of their story that exist independently of this main focus. I loved reading about Sophie's family, and Peter's friends, and I thought all of these separate elements were incredibly balanced.

I am so hesitant to say anything about this book, because I really think it's best if you don't go in with many expectations about what you might get out of reading it. This is not the book I thought it might be, and I couldn't be happier with what it really was. If you like complex characters with complicated relationships, read this book. If you like writing so beautiful that a single phrase can give you so many emotions, read this book. Hell, if there is anything about this book that makes you even vaguely interested in it, take that chance. It will be worth it.

I'm going to be even more vague at this point because I don't want to spoil anything, but this book has one of the most meaningful and memorable last lines of anything I've ever read. I still get emotional just thinking about it. And if you also have feelings about that line and these characters, I highly recommend this song. Personally, I'm going to listen to it on repeat while counting down the days until TODAY TONIGHT TOMORROW.
What are some of your favorite books about complicated friendships? Tell me in the comments!

  1. This book was all the tears and emotional confusion. I was happy and sad all at the same time.

Thoughts on Required Reading

This blog post is brought to you by Pride and Prejudice and my AP Lit class. I've been thinking a lot about required reading, probably because I'm having to do so much of it. School comes with many types of required reading. Today, I won't be talking about reading excerpts from textbooks on various subjects, because I think everyone agrees that unless the subject is of particular interest, those readings are boring at best and painful at worst. Instead, I'm talking about being required to read entire works of literature (or, less often, nonfiction). During winter break this year, I was required to read Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice . I thought that this would be one of my easiest assignments ever. I LOVE that book. I read it for fun two summers ago and could barely put it down! I was expecting wonderful days curled up on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate, enjoying the chance to revisit one of my favorite novels while still being productive. Best of all...

That way, I can discuss the boo ks with them, and if I know their tastes well enough, I know I'm givin g them something that they'll love! Unfortunately, I can't do this with the entire world. And that means that there are books that I've really enjoyed t hat just aren't widely loved. Why ? I don't know. And that's why I spend so much time trying to get other people to read them. Here are ten books I've read some what recently that I think really deserve some m ore lo ve. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature at The Broke and the Bookish. This week's theme: Top Ten 2016 Releases I Meant To Read But Didn't Get To (But TOTALLY plan to) So, as you may have noticed, I only posted once last week. My plan for 2017 to be completely on schedule is off to a GREAT start. But it's not going to happen again! I have plans, and I'm going to stick to them. And one misstep shouldn't mean I give up on the whole goal! So here's to the rest of 2017 being completely on schedule. Anyway, moving on to posts that are on schedule - top ten Tuesday! This was a pretty easy topic - I never get around to all of the books that I want to. I'd say that the I read the most releases from any given year in the next year, so I'm sure I'll be reading plenty of 2016 releases this year. Here are the ten that I'm most excited about!
