December Wrap-Up and My Second Blogoversary

Well, it's the end of another month, and of another year. But there's something else that today marks...my second blogoversary! Two years ago, I started this blog with my top ten books of 2015 (which...I'll be honest, not all of those are favorites anymore), and I never dreamed that blogging would have introduced me to so many people or books or opportunities. I haven't been around much these past few months, but I'm really hoping that this third year of blogging that I'm starting (wow, it feels so weird to write that) is going to be even better than the ones I've had so far.

Obligatory blogoversary party/dance gif:

Last year, I did a giveaway of one of my favorite books of the year. I'm not doing a giveaway in this post, but I'm considering doing a belated one in the new year - let me know if that would be something you're interested in!

Onto this month's wrap-up. I had to read a lot this month to make up for falling behind. And I'm not going to talk about every single book, because do you really want to hear about 10 separate Star Wars picture books? There are a couple at the very end that I haven't quite finished yet, but I'm going to do that before the end of the year if it kills me.

Highlights from my reading month:
  • A SEMI-DEFINITIVE LIST OF WORST NIGHTMARES made it onto my favorites list!
  • I caught up on a couple of comics series thanks to my library finally getting a bunch of new volumes in.
  • I read MY LADY JANE about a year after all the hype and it was super funny!
  • I finished two books that I started months ago - THE SECRET KEEPERS and STYLE - and the time gap didn't interfere with how much I liked them at all!
  • The public library near my school had an entire display of Chanukah picture books that made my heart so happy, and I found two about Chelm that were absolutely delightful: CHANUKAH IN CHELM and THE JAR OF FOOLS.
I'm not writing about my challenges here because I just did a yearly wrap-up post for those, which you can find here. I ended up finishing most of my challenges, but the couple that I didn't manage to get through I was really behind on. Here's to more realistic goals for next year!

How was your reading year? What was your favorite book? Did you have any last-minute surprises? What's your first read of 2018 going to be? Tell me in the comments!

Thoughts on Required Reading

This blog post is brought to you by Pride and Prejudice and my AP Lit class. I've been thinking a lot about required reading, probably because I'm having to do so much of it. School comes with many types of required reading. Today, I won't be talking about reading excerpts from textbooks on various subjects, because I think everyone agrees that unless the subject is of particular interest, those readings are boring at best and painful at worst. Instead, I'm talking about being required to read entire works of literature (or, less often, nonfiction). During winter break this year, I was required to read Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice . I thought that this would be one of my easiest assignments ever. I LOVE that book. I read it for fun two summers ago and could barely put it down! I was expecting wonderful days curled up on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate, enjoying the chance to revisit one of my favorite novels while still being productive. Best of all...

Ten Books I Need More People to Love

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature at The Broke and Bookish. This week's theme: Top Ten Underrated/Hidden Gem Books You've Read in the Past Year or So. One of my favorite things to do is get other people to read books I love. That way, I can discuss the boo ks with them, and if I know their tastes well enough, I know I'm givin g them something that they'll love! Unfortunately, I can't do this with the entire world. And that means that there are books that I've really enjoyed t hat just aren't widely loved. Why ? I don't know. And that's why I spend so much time trying to get other people to read them. Here are ten books I've read some what recently that I think really deserve some m ore lo ve. IRON CAST by Destiny Soria: I'll never get tired of diverse books, I 'll never get tired of historical fiction, and I'll never get tired of positive female friendships. Ten 2016 Releases I Didn't Get To (But TOTALLY Plan To)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature at The Broke and the Bookish. This week's theme: Top Ten 2016 Releases I Meant To Read But Didn't Get To (But TOTALLY plan to) So, as you may have noticed, I only posted once last week. My plan for 2017 to be completely on schedule is off to a GREAT start. But it's not going to happen again! I have plans, and I'm going to stick to them. And one misstep shouldn't mean I give up on the whole goal! So here's to the rest of 2017 being completely on schedule. Anyway, moving on to posts that are on schedule - top ten Tuesday! This was a pretty easy topic - I never get around to all of the books that I want to. I'd say that the I read the most releases from any given year in the next year, so I'm sure I'll be reading plenty of 2016 releases this year. Here are the ten that I'm most excited about!
