Ten 2016 Releases I Didn't Get To (But TOTALLY Plan To)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature at The Broke and the Bookish. This week's theme: Top Ten 2016 Releases I Meant To Read But Didn't Get To (But TOTALLY plan to)

So, as you may have noticed, I only posted once last week. My plan for 2017 to be completely on schedule is off to a GREAT start. But it's not going to happen again! I have plans, and I'm going to stick to them. And one misstep shouldn't mean I give up on the whole goal! So here's to the rest of 2017 being completely on schedule.

Anyway, moving on to posts that are on schedule - top ten Tuesday! This was a pretty easy topic - I never get around to all of the books that I want to. I'd say that the I read the most releases from any given year in the next year, so I'm sure I'll be reading plenty of 2016 releases this year. Here are the ten that I'm most excited about!

THIS SAVAGE SONG by Victoria Schwab (Monsters of Verity #1): I've been saying that this book is a priority since last July, but somehow, I still haven't read it! I've heard nothing but amazing things, so hopefully I'll get to it in time to read the sequel when it comes out.

P.S. I LIKE YOU by Kasie West: Since I've discovered Kasie West, I've read all of her books pretty quickly after they come out. But I haven't even gotten a copy of this one yet! Considering she has two more books out this year, I really need to get on this.

GEORGIA PEACHES AND OTHER FORBIDDEN FRUIT by Jaye Robin Brown: I really want to read more books about queer girls, and this sounds perfect for me. I'm really looking forward to it!

STALKING JACK THE RIPPER by Kerri Maniscalco (Stalking Jack the Ripper #1): This one wasn't really a priority for me last year, but I've heard so many amazing things about it lately that I really want to pick it up soon!

 THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES by Mindy McGinnis: I've only read one Mindy McGinnis book, A MADNESS SO DISCREET, but I loved it so much that I knew I needed to read anything and everything else by her. And it doesn't hurt that I haven't heard anything but love for this book!

THE SECRET KEEPERS by Trenton Lee Stewart: I almost bought this at Barnes & Noble the other day, but I was kind to my wallet and stuck with one book (WAYFARER, in case you were wondering). But I'm absolutely thrilled that there's a new book by the author of THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY! And it looks like it's going to be just as great.

 LADY MIDNIGHT by Cassandra Clare (The Dark Artifices #1): I didn't pick this book up as soon as it came out because people said that I should read TALES FROM THE SHADOWHUNTER ACADEMY first (which I also have yet to get to). But I'm going to read both of them this year! It's been too long since I've read a book in this world.

 THE HIDDEN ORACLE by Rick Riordan (The Trials of Apollo #1): I haven't even read THE BLOOD OF OLYMPUS yet, but I NEED to read this book! Basically, I need to catch up on everything Rick Riordan's written, but I've heard especially good things about this.

THE STAR-TOUCHED QUEEN by Roshani Chokshi (The Star-Touched Queen #1): This is another one that just wasn't a priority until I heard all of the hype. With everything I've heard about this, I have high hopes - I'm hoping to get to this one soon!

THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE by Heidi Heilig (The Girl From Everywhere #1): This one's actually on my TBR for this month, so I'll be able to check at least one book off this list very soon! I've been meaning to get to this for months now, and if Heidi Heilig's books are anywhere near as amazing as her Twitter account, I'm going to love it.

    Awesome list! This Savage Song, P. S. I Like You, Georgia Peaches, and Lady Midnight were all some of my favorite reads of last year. Stalking Jack and The Star-Touched Queen both made my TTT list today, too-- I can't wait to get to them. I also really want to read The Female of the Species.

      I heard so many amazing things - I really should have read it this past summer, and I almost did! The Barnes & Noble I went to was completely out of copies, and I just never got around to getting it after that.

      I'm really excited about those two! And I've heard that The Hidden Oracle is wonderful and funny from just about everyone who's read it, which really makes me wonder why I haven't just picked it up yet. It sounds so good!

    You NEED PS. I Like You and The Female of the Species SO MUCH! I love both for different reasons hahaha also yes to The Hidden Oracle, funniest Rick Riordan's book to date :P I didn't really enjoy This Savage Song though, it was probably my least favorite Schwab's book �� and I didn't like The Star Touched Queen for its lack of plot hehe but I hope you enjoy all of these when you read them! :D

      Those two look like such great books for such different reasons! As for Rick Riordan, considering how much his books have made me laugh already, saying that The Hidden Oracle is his funniest is high praise. I haven't read any V.E./Victoria Schwab books yet - I'll probably read A Darker Shade of Magic before This Savage Song, just because I already have a copy of it. I think you're the only person I've seen who hasn't liked The Star-Touched Queen! Knowing that it's not big on plot is helpful, though.

    This Savage Song is fantabulous and P.S. I Like You is super adorable---just like all of West's books. I also really enjoyed Stalking Jack the Ripper. I still need to get to Star-Touched Queen too. I got it for Christmas and am looking forward to reading it!

    omg This Savage Song is AMAZING and I demand you devour it ASAP. ;D And I loved The Girl From Everywhere although I was sooo confused for The Star Touched Queen hahaha. It's beautiful though and has lyrical writing so if you like that then it's still definitely worth the read I say. And I didn't get to Stalking Jack the Ripper either although I don't feel too bad because I don't actually own it hehe. But I've heard great things!

      I'm trying to devour This Savage Song! It's never at the library when I go, and since the website says there are never any holds, I'm beginning to think that either I'm very unlucky or they're lying about having it.

Thoughts on Required Reading

This blog post is brought to you by Pride and Prejudice and my AP Lit class. I've been thinking a lot about required reading, probably because I'm having to do so much of it. School comes with many types of required reading. Today, I won't be talking about reading excerpts from textbooks on various subjects, because I think everyone agrees that unless the subject is of particular interest, those readings are boring at best and painful at worst. Instead, I'm talking about being required to read entire works of literature (or, less often, nonfiction). During winter break this year, I was required to read Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice . I thought that this would be one of my easiest assignments ever. I LOVE that book. I read it for fun two summers ago and could barely put it down! I was expecting wonderful days curled up on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate, enjoying the chance to revisit one of my favorite novels while still being productive. Best of all...

10 Books That Will Make You Laugh

I like when books make me feel things, and I know that a lot of readers agree with me. It's why we aggressively recommend the books that have turned us into sobbing messes. However, I think as a whole, we think of feeling things while reading as feeling sad or angry or frustrated. Why don't we put a little more focus on the books that make us happy? I was very glad to see that this week's Top Ten Tuesday (a weekly feature at The Broke and the Bookish ) was top 10 books that will make you laugh.
